Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 10 minutes
Steeping time: 5 minutes
Yield: Approximately 2 servings
Ingredients
For the herbal infusion
1 ripe pear, cored and thinly sliced
4–5 thin slices fresh ginger
2 tsp dried food-grade elderflowers
2½ cups water
1–2 tsp honey, to taste
1–2 tsp fresh lemon juice, to taste
For the warm version
2 mugs of prepared herbal infusion
Optional: add thin lemon slices
For the sparkling version
1 cup prepared herbal infusion, chilled
1–1½ cups chilled sparkling water
Ice
Fresh pear slices
Optional: thyme leaves
Method
Add the sliced pear, fresh ginger and water to a small saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer, cover and cook for 10 minutes, allowing the pear to soften and release its flavour.
Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the dried elderflowers, cover again and steep for 5 minutes.
Strain the infusion through a fine-mesh sieve, pressing gently on the pear to extract its flavour.
While the infusion is still warm, stir in the honey until dissolved. Add lemon juice to taste.
At this point, you have your base infusion, ready to enjoy warm or chill for later.
Option 1: Warm Pear, Ginger & Elderflower Elixir
Pour the freshly prepared infusion into two mugs.
Garnish with a thin slice lemon.
Enjoy slowly while warm.
Flavour tip: For a little extra warmth, add a small cinnamon stick while simmering the pear and ginger. Keep the cinnamon subtle so the delicate elderflower remains noticeable.
Option 2: Sparkling Pear, Ginger & Elderflower Mocktail
Allow the prepared infusion to cool completely, then refrigerate until chilled.
Fill a glass with ice and add ½ cup of the chilled infusion. Top with ½–¾ cup sparkling water, depending on how strong or light you'd like the flavour.
Garnish with thin pear slices and fresh thyme leaves. Stir gently and serve immediately.
Flavour tip: For a more pronounced pear flavour, use less sparkling water. For a lighter, more refreshing drink, add a little extra fizz and lemon. Switch up the sparkling water for prosecco if your ready for the witching hour.
A little herbal wisdom
Elderflower has a long history of traditional use in herbal preparations, while ginger brings a warming, aromatic quality to this infusion. Pear contributes natural sweetness, and lemon adds a bright finish.
Choose food-grade dried elderflowers from a reputable supplier, and check with a healthcare professional if you have questions about herbal ingredients and medications.
Make-ahead and storage tips
Prepare the infusion in advance, allow it to cool and transfer it to a clean, sealed container. Refrigerate promptly and use within 2 days.
When you're ready to enjoy it, gently reheat the amount you need for the warm version, or pour it over ice and add sparkling water for the chilled version.
Keep the sparkling water separate until serving to preserve the bubbles.
Make it your own
A little sweeter: Add extra honey to taste.
A brighter finish: Increase the lemon juice slightly.
More ginger warmth: Add another slice or two of ginger during simmering.
A botanical twist: Garnish the sparkling version with fresh lemon balm.
A cozy autumn variation: Add a small cinnamon stick during simmering.
A moment to slow down
Sometimes a simple ritual is enough to make an ordinary day feel a little more intentional. Whether you choose a warm mug or a sparkling glass, this pear and elderflower infusion is an invitation to pause, savour the season and enjoy something made from scratch.
